Road Construction Time-Lapse Ireland N81 Baltinglass Roundabout Case Study

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Client: Fitzpatrick and Heavey Homes
Location: N81, Baltinglass
Service: Time-Lapse Documentation (Time-Lapse + Drone)
Project Type: Road Infrastructure / Roundabout Construction

INTRO

This project documents the construction of a new roundabout on the N81 in Baltinglass, capturing the full progression of the works from early groundwork through to completion. Working with Fitzpatrick and Heavey Homes, a structured time-lapse approach was used to record each phase of the project, creating a clear and continuous visual record of a key piece of infrastructure in County Wicklow.

Project Summery

The N81 roundabout in Baltinglass formed an important piece of infrastructure within County Wicklow, supporting a new residential development and improving the overall flow of traffic along the N81. As the first roundabout introduced to the town, it marked a significant addition to the local road network and was a welcome development for the area.

The time-lapse system was installed for approximately four months, capturing the full duration of the works from initial groundwork through to the final road layout and completion.

The Challenge

Road infrastructure projects such as this present different challenges compared to traditional building works. Activity is spread across a wider area, often carried out in phases, and must accommodate live traffic conditions. Capturing consistent progress as the site changes in layout and function requires a structured and reliable approach.

The Solution

A time-lapse system with a wide 220-degree field of view was installed to provide continuous coverage of the N81 site, ensuring all stages of the roundabout construction were recorded.

x

The system maintained a fixed perspective of the works, capturing changes in road layout, traffic management, and construction progress over time. Drone footage was captured before and after the project to provide additional context and a broader overview of the completed infrastructure.

What Was Captured

The full development of the roundabout was documented, including site preparation, initial groundwork, phased road construction, and final completion. The time-lapse clearly shows how the N81 junction evolved and how traffic flow was introduced and managed as the project progressed.

How the Content Was Used

The final video was used across social media to demonstrate the scale of the project, highlighting both the construction process and the impact on traffic flow and management. The content provided a clear and engaging way to communicate the transformation of the site.

Final Deliverables

The final output included a fully edited time-lapse video, combining the full progression of the works with drone footage captured before and after completion. High-resolution image exports were also provided, with all content delivered in a format suitable for digital use.

Why This Matters

Infrastructure projects like the N81 roundabout play a key role in supporting development and improving how towns function. As the first roundabout in Baltinglass, this project represents a meaningful upgrade to the local road network. This case study demonstrates how time-lapse can capture complex, phased works in a clear and structured way, making it easier to communicate both the process and the impact of the project.
